This is what is left of where I started … my home in Livingston, California, right outside the front gates of Foster Farms.
I paid $11,000 for this house in 1976 with a first and second mortgage. Later, my dad took out a third mortgage on it for $5,000 so I could start my MLM business. That’s right. $5,000 worth of product in 1977. That would be about $25,000 today. What are you willing to invest to achieve your dream?
The Four Year Career was created in 1979 as part of a big idea I had to recruit college kids at Drake. I interviewed 30 marketing majors and pitched them the idea of … “What if you invested 10 hours a week in each of your four college years and graduated with an Asset Income of $3,000 – $4,000 a month? What life choices could you make differently? How would YOUR life be different if you graduated with a full-time Residual Income?” Wow.
At age 28, I had 30,000 active partners building with me, but these guys were the foundation. The two tallest were my upline, all best friends from Merced/Modesto, California, all 22 – 23 years old. We were headed out on our first cruise.
After studying under greats like Kurt Robb, Paul J. Meyer and Lou Tice, and reading everything from “Think and Grow Rich” to “Psycho-Cybernetics,” I started teaching workshops on Vision and Self-Motivation as an edge to motivate my sales teams to succeed. In 1983 I invested $22,000 to become a certified Pacific Institute Facilitator for Lou Tice transformational workshops. I learned that our self-esteem, our internal stories and our belief systems determine whether or not we’ll be successful in any given venture. This became my focus.
SUCCESS magazine featured me and the company I owned on the cover. It was the first and last time SUCCESS magazine ever featured Network Marketing on the cover. This issue outsold every issue in the 100-year history of SUCCESS.

After doing Vision and Self-Motivation workshops for many years, I finally wrote Mach2 in 1995 as a way for the participants to carry on with the work. Many people still have these “collector’s edition” manuscripts.
“Mach2: The Art of Vision & Self-Motivation.” The principles in this book are what launched me to breakout success … and what landed me on that history-making cover of SUCCESS magazine.
Mach 2 is an owner’s manual really, for the mind and the motions and the heart, to teach you how to create, on your own, a state of self-motivation.
I began a crusade in 1990 to raise the standards of our professionalism and our industry image. The Upline Masters series was the first generic series of events in our profession led by John Fogg in the late 1980’s inspired by his landmark book, “The Greatest Networker in the World.” Then came The Mastermind Event created by Art Jonak, followed by Eric Worre’s Go Pro. I have been a regular speaker at all of these events and many more.
I was a member of the Direct Selling Association Ethics committee for ten years and a member of the board of directors for 3 years, leading the change in the ethics and compliance conversations of our industry association.
I believe we have the most potent wealth building model on the planet for the average person. And I also believe that most of us that participate, most companies and even the DSA have a massive reinvention project on our hands and hearts. We have to change the way we represent this grand profession. We have to change the value proposition of our products from fad to fabulous. We have to change how we Invite people to take a look. And we have to change the way we self-regulate. We have to do all of this with long range Vision, servant leadership and integrity.

I wrote this book as a fair and honest view of Network Marketing. By writing it, I clearly endorse the Network Marketing business model, but I am also one of its most vocal critics and change agents. The purpose of the book is to educate both sales leaders and the public on the truth about the potential of the income and wealth-building model … and the truth about what it really takes to succeed.
Times have evolved and so has the Network Marketing profession. I updated this book with the latest stats and the latest techniques to help your prospect see the Vision of Network Marketing and what is possible.
I dress up as Super MLM Man and hit the streets in Spokane, Honolulu, Las Vegas, and Salt Lake City to interview the public on what they know, believe and think about the Network Marketing model.
What becomes obvious is that the public has no idea what Network Marketing is, what MLM is, or even what Direct Selling is. No idea. But they do know what Amway is, and they do think they know what a pyramid scheme is. None of it is good.
One of the best gifts I have received from the profession is the gift of love. A speaking engagement led me to connect and fall madly in love with my now wife, soul mate and partner for life, Kimmy.
Together, we own two global businesses and run them from our personal paradises in Lanai, Hawaii; Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; and Boulder, Colorado.

We bought a house on the Island of Lanai, Hawaii, dubbed The Private Island. It used to be the Dole pineapple plantation Island; now 97% of Lanai is owned by Larry Ellison. It is 90,000 acres of pure paradise with no stop lights, 29 miles of paved roads, one gas station, and one grocery store; but, of course, there is a Four Seasons and a Nobu!
In contrast to being right outside the gates of the chicken plant, our home sits atop the 18th tee box of the famed Challenge at Manele, with a 180-degree full ocean view. We get to see the sun rise and set on the water.
The Lanai community is like family. I think everyone here feels how fortunate they are to have Paradise Found.
